Which type of sequence induces a beat in newborn infants when presented with isochronous timing?
Binary accented sequence |
We employed a binary accented sequence that produces a beat when provided in isochronous timing but not when presented in arbitrarily jittered timing.
Newborn newborns have been demonstrated to extract temporal regularities from sound sequences, both in terms of acquiring regular sequential qualities and extracting periodicity in the input, sometimes known as a regular pulse or 'beat'. However, in isochronous sequences, these two forms of regularities are frequently confused, because the regular alternation of accented and unaccented sounds can elicit both statistical learning and beat perception. In this EEG experiment, we altered the isochrony of sound sequences to decouple statistical learning from beat perception in sleeping newborn newborns, as we had previously done in humans and macaque monkeys. We employed a binary accented sequence that produces a beat when provided in isochronous timing but not when presented in arbitrarily jittered timing. We examined mismatch reactions to occasional deviants that appeared in either accented or unaccented (i.e., odd and even) locations. The results revealed a strong distinction between metrical places in the isochronous sequence but not in the comparable jittered sequence. This implies that babies can process beats. Despite earlier evidence of statistical learning in infants, the impacts of this capacity were not observed in the jittered condition. These findings indicate that statistical learning does not entirely explain beat processing in newborn newborns.
